Therapy

Therapy for addiction is the very core of the work at Brynawel. We offer one to one, group therapy and holistic therapy alongside emotional education - all held within the safe supportive environment that is Brynawel.

 Therapy at Brynawel

Through engaging with the therapy programme, residents can begin to understand the experiences and patterns that have shaped their lives, and explore new ways of thinking, relating and behaving.

Over time, this can help people make meaningful changes not only in their relationship with alcohol or drugs, but in how they want to live and who they want to be in the world.

Individual Therapy

Every resident at Brynawel is assigned a dedicated therapist who they see at least once a week, for a one-to-one therapy session.

This gives residents a safe confidential space to explore their life experiences, thoughts, feelings and behaviours. Therapists work to help them understand how these things may have shaped their lives, choices, relationships and sense of self.

Through this understanding, and by dealing with difficult experiences and emotions, the space opens up where new ways of being and behaving can be explored. Brynawel then offers a safe environment where, over the weeks, these new ways of being can take root and become a new identity and way of living.

Group Therapy

Through group therapy, residents learn to build relationships based on trust, openness, mutual support and respect.

Being heard and understood without judgement can help people to release difficult thoughts and emotions, without needing to turn to alcohol, drugs or other harmful patterns. Sharing with others creates opportunities to challenge old beliefs, develop new perspectives and reduce feelings of shame and isolation. Hearing other people’s stories and perspectives can be a valuable part of this process, helping residents see aspects of their own experiences in the lives of others. This safe, supported approach can help residents learn confidence, heal relationships and develop healthier ways of relating to themselves and others. This in turn is a strong foundation for lasting recovery.

Through these group sessions we explore different themes, like patterns of behaviour, roles and life goals. Our group sessions are really a place for sharing, reflection, listening and learning around topics which directly impact recovery and foster healthy positive living.

Understanding and managing emotions

Emotions are an important part of recovery.

Our programme helps people understand what they are feeling and experience difficult emotions without becoming overwhelmed. Residents learn healthier ways to regulate distress, so alcohol or drugs no longer have to be their main way of coping. Over time, they develop greater emotional awareness, confidence and choice, helping them respond more safely and effectively to life’s challenges.

Holistic therapy

For many residents, long periods of alcohol or drug use has reduced their confidence, motivation and involvement in everyday life.

At Brynawel, our holistic therapy programme gives residents the opportunity to take part in practical, physical and group activities, both within our grounds and in a range of settings across South Wales.

These experiences are designed to help residents rebuild confidence, communicate more effectively and learn to trust and rely on others again. Healthy relationships and connections with others are an essential part of recovery. Working towards challenges can strengthen relationships and gives residents the experience of succeeding as part of a group and individually.

Over time, these activities help people reconnect with their abilities, interests and confidence. Residents graduate from Brynawel with new hobbies, outlets for enjoyment and a renewed sense of joy and purpose in life.
