Holistic Therapy
Our holistic therapies programme runs alongside Brynawel’s talking therapy programme. These activities help build confidence, develop healthy routines and teach important new hobbies. The Holistic Therapies Programme offers calming new skills and teaching practical ways residents can support their wellbeing which they can take into life after Brynawel.
Holistic therapies at Brynawel
Alongside our Talking therapy programme, Brynawel offers a range of practical and creative holistic therapies designed to rebuild skills, confidence and enjoyment in everyday life.
These include cooking classes, walks in nature, exercise, craft activities, yoga, meditation and time spent outdoors.
These activities are enjoyable, but they also play an important role in recovery. They offer opportunities to slow down, develop healthy routines, improve physical health, build confidence and connect with others. Residents also discover new ways to find calm, manage stress and cope with difficult emotions.
For people whose lives may have become increasingly centred around alcohol or drugs, recovery also involves rediscovering what a fulfilling day can look like. Our Holistic Therapies Programme supports the talking therapeutic work taking place at Brynawel while helping residents develop interests, skills and healthy sources of enjoyment that can continue long after rehab.

Bee keeping
Beekeeping offers a combination of calm attention, responsibility and purposeful activity. Working around bees encourages slow, deliberate movement and close observation, creating an opportunity to become absorbed in the moment without the activity needing to feel like a formal mindfulness practice. Caring for a hive can also build confidence, routine and a sense of achievement. Residents can take part in different aspects of beekeeping, from learning about bee welfare to helping with hive management, allowing people to become involved at a level that feels comfortable to them. Working together around the hives encourages connection with others and with the natural environment, while caring for a living colony can bring a valuable sense of purpose and responsibility.

Bushcraft
Bushcraft provides a nature based environment that fosters emotional regulation and connection with others. It's great for building confidence and self esteem through learning practical new skills like fire making, shelter building, wood work, bush cooking and much more. Residents in our wooded camp can relax and focus on their tasks while naturally becoming present in the moment. Bushcraft is both a hobby and an excellent activity to occupy and calm the mind.

Horticultural therapy
At Brynawel, we use gardening and the natural world to support wellbeing and recovery. Residents can take part in growing food and flowers, nature journalling and creative activities using natural materials. Caring for plants provides a calming, purposeful activity while encouraging patience, routine and a sense of achievement. Gardening also naturally involves skills such as planning, memory, organisation and problem-solving, which can be particularly valuable for residents living with Alcohol Related Brain Damage (ARBD). Working together outdoors creates opportunities for connection, conversation and laughter, while helping residents discover healthy, enjoyable activities they can carry forward into life beyond Brynawel.

Nature walks
Recovery is also about reconnecting with the world outside. For some residents, long periods of alcohol or drug use may have meant becoming increasingly isolated and disconnected from nature, and exercise. At Brynawel, we make the most of our location in South Wales with regular walks along the coast, beaches and countryside.. Walking provides gentle physical exercise while time outdoors offers fresh air, changing scenery and an opportunity to step away from the pressures of treatment. Exploring together can lift mood, build confidence and encourage social connection — helping residents rediscover the simple pleasure of being active and out in the world.

Pottery studio
Brynawel has its own fully equipped pottery studio, where residents can work with expert guidance from our tutor. Pottery offers a calming, absorbing activity that encourages people to slow down, focus on what they are doing and engage with the present moment. The physical experience of working with clay can be very grounding, providing a welcome break from difficult thoughts and emotions. Learning pottery gives residents opportunities to develop new skills, experiment creatively, and experience the satisfaction of making something with their own hands. Not everything goes to plan as clay can crack, collapse and behave unexpectedly, making the process itself a gentle opportunity to practise patience, persistence and acceptance. It can also introduce residents to a rewarding hobby they may choose to continue beyond treatment.

Willow weaving
The therapeutic value of wicker weaving has long been recognised. The repetitive, rhythmic nature of the weaving can be calming and absorbing, encouraging concentration and providing a grounding, hands-on activity away from everyday worries. Learning a new craft also develops patience, coordination and confidence, while completing a piece brings a tangible sense of achievement.

Meditation and yoga
Yoga and meditation are popular parts of the weekly timetable at Brynawel, giving residents time to slow down, reconnect with themselves and take a break from the demands of treatment and everyday life. Yoga combines gentle movement, stretching and breathing. It can help improve flexibility, balance and body awareness, while also offering a practical way to release tension and support a calmer state of mind. Meditation gives residents an opportunity to pause, notice what they are feeling, and practise responding to thoughts and emotions with a little more space. Over time, it can become a useful tool for managing stress, building self-awareness and supporting emotional wellbeing.

Arts and crafts
Arts and crafts are a regular part of life at Brynawel, with opportunities to explore a wide range of creative activities. Creative work can offer a different way to express thoughts and feelings, while also encouraging concentration, patience and confidence. Painting, drawing, making and other hands-on activities give residents space to slow down, enjoy the process and reconnect with interests they may have lost touch with. They can also provide a sense of achievement and introduce hobbies that continue to support wellbeing after treatment.

Cooking classes
At Brynawel, our chef runs regular cooking classes for residents, helping people build confidence in the kitchen and rediscover the enjoyment of preparing food for themselves and others. For some residents, long periods of alcohol or drug use may have meant losing the habit of cooking, eating well or taking care of everyday needs. Learning to cook can help rebuild those routines, develop practical skills and encourage greater independence. It also offers a chance to think about nutrition, self-care and the simple pleasure of making and sharing good food — habits that can continue to support wellbeing long after treatment.

Gym and leisure centre
Exercise and physical activity are an important part of wellbeing and recovery at Brynawel. We have both indoor and outdoor gym facilities on site, giving residents regular opportunities to build strength, improve fitness and get moving. We also make regular trips to a local leisure centre, where residents can access a wider range of facilities. Exercise can help improve energy, sleep and mood, while providing structure, routine and a healthy way to manage stress. For many residents, it is also an opportunity to rebuild confidence and rediscover activities they can continue to enjoy after treatment.
